The Chambers: Kayla's Home!

Sorry for the delayed post. I know many of you keep checking back waiting for an update and I have not been very good at that since Kayla has been home.

We are so excited to have Kayla home with us. Her breathing miraculously got better and they moved her out of the NICU at the beginning of August and less then a week later she was discharged on August 9th. Unfortunately shortly after she came home the whole family got a cold, including Kayla which has made her breathing a bit harder for her. We always have saline and a bulb nearby so we can clean her out when necessary. I am hopeful and it seems like she is finally clearing up. We have had many doctors appointments and even a trip to the ER since she's been home. Last week we noticed a bit of an infection on her incision so I took her to the doctor and was re-routed to the ER since we had to see the surgeon. It turned out that some of her stitches under the skin did not dissolve and were working their way out. This allowed a way in for bacteria which caused her infection. They removed the stitches and sent us home with antibiotics. Her incision finally has a chance to heal properly, thank goodness.
We are slowly getting her where she needs to be. Right now we are working on her oral feeding. Hopefully she will be eating more from the bottle and less from the g-tube soon. It is a work in progress. Because of her heart problem they want Kayla to gain lots of weight so her feedings are timed with extra fortified breast milk so she gets more calories. This makes it hard to bottle feed since she doesn't really get hungry. I am hoping that once she has her heart surgery they will back off and allow her feeding schedule to be more relaxed.

Madi and Wesley love their baby sister. I constantly find Madi sitting next to her and holding her hand. Sometimes Kayla gets upset and Madi will stroke her head and softly tell her that it's alright. Wesley likes to put his face just centimeters from Kayla's and then jump back laughing over and over, it's some kind of game he plays with her. He also loves holding her. Many times he has come over while I'm holding her and he wraps his arms around her and tries to yank her from me. I help him hold her and he always tries to walk away with her and he never wants to give her back.

We love having Kayla home and are so happy that she is doing well. When she is awake she is very interactive and very aware. She gives many smiles which brightens our days. We love her so much.
